🎯 In this lesson, you will learn to

  • Place fractions/decimals in Q, reduce fractions, operate.
  • Apply proportionality to VAT.

The lesson

Introduction

In a hardware shop in Matadi, the label on a bag of cement shows a price before tax (HT); at the till you pay the price including all taxes (TTC), which includes the value added tax (VAT, in French TVA). Computing VAT requires handling fractions and proportionality well. In this lesson you place fractions and decimals in Q\mathbb{Q}, reduce a fraction to lowest terms, operate on fractions and compute VAT.

Explanation

The set Q\mathbb{Q} and fractions in lowest terms

A rational number can be written ab\dfrac{a}{b} with a∈Za\in\mathbb{Z}, b∈Zb\in\mathbb{Z} and bβ‰ 0b\ne0. We have NβŠ‚ZβŠ‚DβŠ‚Q\mathbb{N}\subset\mathbb{Z}\subset\mathbb{D}\subset\mathbb{Q}.

  • βˆ’7=βˆ’71-7=\dfrac{-7}{1} and 0.25=140.25=\dfrac{1}{4} are rational numbers.
  • 13=0.333…\dfrac{1}{3}=0.333\dots is rational but not a decimal: the division never ends.

A fraction is in lowest terms when its numerator and denominator have no common divisor other than 11. To reduce it, divide both terms by their GCD (in French PGCD).

Explanation

Operations on fractions

  • Addition and subtraction: write with the same denominator (the LCM of the denominators), then add or subtract the numerators: 56βˆ’14=1012βˆ’312=712\dfrac{5}{6}-\dfrac{1}{4}=\dfrac{10}{12}-\dfrac{3}{12}=\dfrac{7}{12}.
  • Multiplication: abΓ—cd=aΓ—cbΓ—d\dfrac{a}{b}\times\dfrac{c}{d}=\dfrac{a\times c}{b\times d}. Simplify before multiplying when possible.
  • Division: dividing by a non-zero fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal: abΓ·cd=abΓ—dc\dfrac{a}{b}\div\dfrac{c}{d}=\dfrac{a}{b}\times\dfrac{d}{c}.
  • The sign rules of Z\mathbb{Z} apply: βˆ’ab=βˆ’ab\dfrac{-a}{b}=-\dfrac{a}{b}.

Explanation

VAT, a proportionality situation

In the DRC, the standard VAT rate is 16%16\%. VAT is always computed on the price before tax:
VAT=HTΓ—16100TTC=HT+VAT=HTΓ—1.16\text{VAT}=\text{HT}\times\dfrac{16}{100}\qquad\text{TTC}=\text{HT}+\text{VAT}=\text{HT}\times1.16

So the TTC price is proportional to the HT price, with coefficient 1.161.16.

HT price (FC)1 0001\,0005 0005\,00020 00020\,000
TTC price (FC)1 1601\,1605 8005\,80023 20023\,200

To find the HT price from the TTC price, divide by 1.161.16: HT=TTCΓ·1.16\text{HT}=\text{TTC}\div1.16.

Worked example

Problem: Reduce the fraction 84126\dfrac{84}{126} to lowest terms.

Step 1: Factorise: 84=22Γ—3Γ—784=2^2\times3\times7 and 126=2Γ—32Γ—7126=2\times3^2\times7.

Step 2: GCD =2Γ—3Γ—7=42=2\times3\times7=42.

Step 3: 84126=84Γ·42126Γ·42=23\dfrac{84}{126}=\dfrac{84\div42}{126\div42}=\dfrac{2}{3}.

Answer: 23\dfrac{2}{3}, because 22 and 33 have no common divisor other than 11.

Worked example

Problem: Compute 56βˆ’34Γ—29\dfrac{5}{6}-\dfrac{3}{4}\times\dfrac{2}{9}.

Step 1: Multiplication comes first: 34Γ—29=636=16\dfrac{3}{4}\times\dfrac{2}{9}=\dfrac{6}{36}=\dfrac{1}{6}.

Step 2: 56βˆ’16=46\dfrac{5}{6}-\dfrac{1}{6}=\dfrac{4}{6}.

Step 3: Simplify by 22: 46=23\dfrac{4}{6}=\dfrac{2}{3}.

Answer: 23\dfrac{2}{3}.

Worked example

Problem: A radio costs 45 00045\,000 FC HT. Compute the 16%16\% VAT and the TTC price. Another item costs 58 00058\,000 FC TTC: what is its HT price?

Step 1: VAT =45 000Γ—0.16=7 200=45\,000\times0.16=7\,200 FC.

Step 2: TTC =45 000+7 200=52 200=45\,000+7\,200=52\,200 FC. Check: 45 000Γ—1.16=52 20045\,000\times1.16=52\,200.

Step 3: HT =58 000Γ·1.16=50 000=58\,000\div1.16=50\,000 FC. Check: 50 000Γ—1.16=58 00050\,000\times1.16=58\,000.

Answer: VAT 7 2007\,200 FC, TTC price 52 20052\,200 FC; the second item costs 50 00050\,000 FC HT.

Watch out

Common mistake: to find the HT price, you do not remove 16%16\% of the TTC price. With 58 00058\,000 FC TTC, the calculation 58 000βˆ’0.16Γ—58 000=48 72058\,000-0.16\times58\,000=48\,720 FC is wrong, because the VAT was computed on the HT price, not on the TTC price. You must divide: 58 000Γ·1.16=50 00058\,000\div1.16=50\,000 FC.

Key points

  • NβŠ‚ZβŠ‚DβŠ‚Q\mathbb{N}\subset\mathbb{Z}\subset\mathbb{D}\subset\mathbb{Q}; 13\dfrac{1}{3} is rational but not a decimal.
  • Lowest terms: divide numerator and denominator by their GCD.
  • Add: same denominator; multiply: numerators together, denominators together; divide: multiply by the reciprocal.
  • VAT == HT Γ—0.16\times0.16; TTC == HT Γ—1.16\times1.16; HT == TTC Γ·1.16\div1.16.
