The lesson

Introduction

A farmer in Kikwit enlarges a square field of side xx metres by lengthening each of its sides by 33 m. The area of the new field is (x+3)2(x+3)^2. How many square metres has he gained? To answer, you need to expand such an expression. In this lesson you add, subtract and multiply polynomials, use special products to expand and factorise, factorise a quadratic trinomial and solve a product equation.

Explanation

Monomials and polynomials

A monomial is the product of a number (the coefficient) and powers of letters (the literal part): in βˆ’5x3-5x^3, the coefficient is βˆ’5-5 and the degree is 33.

Two monomials are like terms if they have the same literal part: 4x24x^2 and βˆ’x2-x^2. Add them by adding the coefficients: 4x2βˆ’x2=3x24x^2-x^2=3x^2.

A polynomial is a sum of monomials. Its degree is the highest degree of its terms: 2x3βˆ’x+72x^3-x+7 has degree 33.

To subtract a polynomial, change the sign of each of its terms: βˆ’(x2βˆ’4x+1)=βˆ’x2+4xβˆ’1-(x^2-4x+1)=-x^2+4x-1.

Explanation

Multiplication and special products

  • Monomial times monomial: multiply the coefficients and add the exponents: (3x2)Γ—(βˆ’2x3)=βˆ’6x5(3x^2)\times(-2x^3)=-6x^5.
  • Double distributive law: (a+b)(c+d)=ac+ad+bc+bd(a+b)(c+d)=ac+ad+bc+bd.

Special products:
(a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2(a+b)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2
(aβˆ’b)2=a2βˆ’2ab+b2(a-b)^2=a^2-2ab+b^2
(a+b)(aβˆ’b)=a2βˆ’b2(a+b)(a-b)=a^2-b^2

Read from left to right, they are used to expand; read from right to left, they are used to factorise: x2βˆ’16=(xβˆ’4)(x+4)x^2-16=(x-4)(x+4).

Explanation

The trinomial x2+sx+px^2+sx+p and product equations

To factorise x2+sx+px^2+sx+p, look for two numbers mm and nn whose sum is ss and whose product is pp. Then:
x2+sx+p=(x+m)(x+n)x^2+sx+p=(x+m)(x+n)
Example: for x2+5x+6x^2+5x+6, we need a sum of 55 and a product of 66: these are 22 and 33, so x2+5x+6=(x+2)(x+3)x^2+5x+6=(x+2)(x+3).

Product equation: a product is zero if and only if one of its factors is zero:
AΓ—B=0β€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€ŠA=0Β orΒ B=0A\times B=0\iff A=0\ \text{or}\ B=0

Worked example

Problem: Let P=3x2βˆ’5x+2P=3x^2-5x+2 and Q=βˆ’x2+4xβˆ’7Q=-x^2+4x-7. Compute P+QP+Q and Pβˆ’QP-Q.

Step 1: P+Q=(3x2βˆ’x2)+(βˆ’5x+4x)+(2βˆ’7)=2x2βˆ’xβˆ’5P+Q=(3x^2-x^2)+(-5x+4x)+(2-7)=2x^2-x-5.

Step 2: Pβˆ’Q=3x2βˆ’5x+2+x2βˆ’4x+7P-Q=3x^2-5x+2+x^2-4x+7 (every sign of QQ changes).

Step 3: Simplify: Pβˆ’Q=4x2βˆ’9x+9P-Q=4x^2-9x+9.

Answer: P+Q=2x2βˆ’xβˆ’5P+Q=2x^2-x-5 and Pβˆ’Q=4x2βˆ’9x+9P-Q=4x^2-9x+9.

Worked example

Problem: Expand (2xβˆ’3)2(2x-3)^2, then factorise 9x2+12x+49x^2+12x+4.

Step 1: With (aβˆ’b)2(a-b)^2, a=2xa=2x and b=3b=3: (2x)2βˆ’2Γ—2xΓ—3+32=4x2βˆ’12x+9(2x)^2-2\times2x\times3+3^2=4x^2-12x+9.

Step 2: In 9x2+12x+49x^2+12x+4, we recognise 9x2=(3x)29x^2=(3x)^2 and 4=224=2^2.

Step 3: Check the middle term: 2Γ—3xΓ—2=12x2\times3x\times2=12x. It is indeed the form a2+2ab+b2a^2+2ab+b^2.

Answer: (2xβˆ’3)2=4x2βˆ’12x+9(2x-3)^2=4x^2-12x+9 and 9x2+12x+4=(3x+2)29x^2+12x+4=(3x+2)^2.

Worked example

Problem: Solve x2βˆ’7x+12=0x^2-7x+12=0.

Step 1: Look for two numbers with sum βˆ’7-7 and product 1212: βˆ’3-3 and βˆ’4-4.

Step 2: So x2βˆ’7x+12=(xβˆ’3)(xβˆ’4)x^2-7x+12=(x-3)(x-4) and the equation becomes (xβˆ’3)(xβˆ’4)=0(x-3)(x-4)=0.

Step 3: xβˆ’3=0x-3=0 or xβˆ’4=0x-4=0, that is x=3x=3 or x=4x=4.

Step 4: Check: 9βˆ’21+12=09-21+12=0 and 16βˆ’28+12=016-28+12=0.

Answer: the solutions are 33 and 44.

Watch out

Very common mistake: (a+b)2β‰ a2+b2(a+b)^2\ne a^2+b^2. People often forget the middle term 2ab2ab. For example, (x+3)2=x2+6x+9(x+3)^2=x^2+6x+9, not x2+9x^2+9. Check with x=1x=1: (1+3)2=16(1+3)^2=16, whereas 12+32=101^2+3^2=10.

Key points

  • Like terms: same literal part; add their coefficients.
  • The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of its terms.
  • (a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2(a+b)^2=a^2+2ab+b^2; (aβˆ’b)2=a2βˆ’2ab+b2(a-b)^2=a^2-2ab+b^2; (a+b)(aβˆ’b)=a2βˆ’b2(a+b)(a-b)=a^2-b^2.
  • x2+sx+p=(x+m)(x+n)x^2+sx+p=(x+m)(x+n) with m+n=sm+n=s and mn=pmn=p.
  • AΓ—B=0β€…β€ŠβŸΊβ€…β€ŠA=0A\times B=0\iff A=0 or B=0B=0.
