  • Solve linear and reducible equations; set up word problems.

The lesson

Introduction

Does the equation 2x+9=12x+9=1 have a solution? Yes if we look in Z\mathbb{Z}: x=βˆ’4x=-4. No if we look only among natural numbers. So the answer to an equation depends on the set in which we solve it. In this lesson you solve first-degree equations in N\mathbb{N}, Z\mathbb{Z}, D\mathbb{D} and Q\mathbb{Q}, as well as equations that reduce to them, and you turn word problems into equations.

Explanation

Solving in a given set

First solve the equation, then keep only the solutions that belong to the required set. We write SS for the solution set.

EquationSolutionIn N\mathbb{N}In Z\mathbb{Z}In Q\mathbb{Q}
x+3=8x+3=855S={5}S=\{5\}S={5}S=\{5\}S={5}S=\{5\}

3x=73x=773\dfrac{7}{3}S=βˆ…S=\varnothingS=βˆ…S=\varnothingS={73}S=\left\{\dfrac{7}{3}\right\}

The symbol βˆ…\varnothing is the empty set: no solution.

Explanation

Special cases after simplifying

After expanding and grouping, we reach an equation of the form ax=bax=b.

  • If aβ‰ 0a\ne0: exactly one solution, x=bax=\dfrac{b}{a}.
  • If a=0a=0 and bβ‰ 0b\ne0: the equality 0=b0=b is false, the equation is impossible: S=βˆ…S=\varnothing.
  • If a=0a=0 and b=0b=0: the equality 0=00=0 is always true, every number in the set is a solution.

Equations that reduce to first degree:

  • when you expand, the terms in x2x^2 cancel: (x+1)2=x2+5(x+1)^2=x^2+5 becomes 2x+1=52x+1=5;
  • a product equation (ax+b)(cx+d)=0(ax+b)(cx+d)=0 gives two first-degree equations.

Explanation

Turning a problem into an equation

  1. Choose the unknown and say what it stands for, with its unit.
  2. Translate each sentence of the problem using the unknown.
  3. Write the equation and solve it.
  4. Check that the solution makes sense: a number of people must be a natural number, a length must be positive.
  5. Answer with a sentence.

Worked example

Problem: Solve 4(xβˆ’1)βˆ’3(2x+5)=14(x-1)-3(2x+5)=1 in Q\mathbb{Q}, then in N\mathbb{N}.

Step 1: Expand: 4xβˆ’4βˆ’6xβˆ’15=14x-4-6x-15=1.

Step 2: Simplify: βˆ’2xβˆ’19=1-2x-19=1, so βˆ’2x=20-2x=20.

Step 3: x=20βˆ’2=βˆ’10x=\dfrac{20}{-2}=-10. Check: 4Γ—(βˆ’11)βˆ’3Γ—(βˆ’15)=βˆ’44+45=14\times(-11)-3\times(-15)=-44+45=1.

Step 4: βˆ’10-10 is a rational number, but it is not a natural number.

Answer: in Q\mathbb{Q}, S={βˆ’10}S=\{-10\}; in N\mathbb{N}, S=βˆ…S=\varnothing.

Worked example

Problem: Solve (x+3)2βˆ’(xβˆ’1)2=24(x+3)^2-(x-1)^2=24.

Step 1: Expand: (x2+6x+9)βˆ’(x2βˆ’2x+1)=24(x^2+6x+9)-(x^2-2x+1)=24.

Step 2: Remove the bracket preceded by βˆ’-: x2+6x+9βˆ’x2+2xβˆ’1=24x^2+6x+9-x^2+2x-1=24.

Step 3: The terms in x2x^2 cancel: 8x+8=248x+8=24, so 8x=168x=16 and x=2x=2.

Step 4: Check: (2+3)2βˆ’(2βˆ’1)2=25βˆ’1=24(2+3)^2-(2-1)^2=25-1=24.

Answer: S={2}S=\{2\}.

Worked example

Problem: A rectangular field near Mbandaka has a length that is 1212 m more than its width. Its perimeter is 104104 m. What are its dimensions?

Step 1: Unknown: β„“\ell, the width in metres. The length is β„“+12\ell+12.

Step 2: Equation: 2(β„“+(β„“+12))=1042\big(\ell+(\ell+12)\big)=104.

Step 3: 2(2β„“+12)=1042(2\ell+12)=104, that is 4β„“+24=1044\ell+24=104, so 4β„“=804\ell=80 and β„“=20\ell=20.

Step 4: Length: 20+12=3220+12=32 m. Check: 2Γ—(20+32)=1042\times(20+32)=104.

Answer: the field measures 3232 m by 2020 m.

Watch out

Two traps:

  • Do not forget the required set: x=βˆ’3x=-3 is a correct answer in Z\mathbb{Z}, but not in N\mathbb{N}.
  • When xx disappears, do not write just anything. For example, 2x+5=2x+12x+5=2x+1 gives 5=15=1: this is false, so S=βˆ…S=\varnothing. You must never "divide by 00".

Key points

  • Solve, then keep the solutions that belong to the required set (N\mathbb{N}, Z\mathbb{Z}, D\mathbb{D} or Q\mathbb{Q}).
  • ax=bax=b: if aβ‰ 0a\ne0, x=bax=\dfrac{b}{a}; if a=0a=0, the equation is impossible or always true.
  • If the terms in x2x^2 cancel, the equation becomes first degree.
  • Word problem: unknown, equation, solving, sense check, answer sentence.
