🎯 In this lesson, you will learn to

  • Write decimals as a × 10ⁿ; bound decimals and approximate.

The lesson

Introduction

A city can have several million inhabitants, while a pollen grain is only a few hundredths of a millimetre long. To write very large or very small numbers without a long row of zeros, we use powers of 10. In this lesson you write a decimal in the form a×10na\times10^n with nn an integer, you bound a decimal and you give approximate values.

Explanation

Powers of 10 with integer exponents

For a whole number nn: 10n=1 0…010^n=1\,0\dots0 (nn zeros) and 10−n=110n=0.0…0110^{-n}=\dfrac{1}{10^n}=0.0\dots01 (the digit 11 is in the nn-th place after the decimal point).

10310^310210^210110^110010^010−110^{-1}10−210^{-2}10−310^{-3}
1 0001\,0001001001010110.10.10.010.010.0010.001

Rules: 10m×10n=10m+n10^m\times10^n=10^{m+n} and 10m10n=10m−n\dfrac{10^m}{10^n}=10^{m-n}.

Multiplying by 10n10^n moves the decimal point nn places to the right; multiplying by 10−n10^{-n} moves it nn places to the left.

Explanation

The form a×10na\times10^n and scientific notation

Every decimal can be written as a whole number times a power of 10: 3.45=345×10−23.45=345\times10^{-2}.

Scientific notation is the form a×10na\times10^n where 1≤a<101\le a<10 and nn is an integer:

  • 3 450=3.45×1033\,450=3.45\times10^3;
  • 0.007 2=7.2×10−30.007\,2=7.2\times10^{-3}.

To find nn, count how many places the decimal point must move to get a number aa between 11 and 1010. A number smaller than 11 has a negative exponent.

Explanation

Bounds and approximate values

To bound xx is to find two numbers aa and bb such that a<x<ba<x<b. The difference b−ab-a is the width of the bound. For x=7.468x=7.468:

  • to the unit: 7<x<87<x<8;
  • to the tenth: 7.4<x<7.57.4<x<7.5;
  • to the hundredth: 7.46<x<7.477.46<x<7.47.

The left number is the lower approximate value, the right one the upper approximate value.

Rounding means choosing the closer of the two. Look at the next digit: if it is 55 or more, take the upper value; otherwise, take the lower value. 7.4687.468 rounded to the hundredth is 7.477.47.

Worked example

Problem: Write 52 000 00052\,000\,000 and 0.000 460.000\,46 in scientific notation.

Step 1: In 52 000 00052\,000\,000, put the decimal point after the 55: 5.25.2. It moved 77 places to the left, so 52 000 000=5.2×10752\,000\,000=5.2\times10^7.

Step 2: In 0.000 460.000\,46, put the decimal point after the 44: 4.64.6. It moved 44 places to the right, so the exponent is −4-4.

Answer: 5.2×1075.2\times10^7 and 4.6×10−44.6\times10^{-4}.

Worked example

Problem: Compute (3×105)×(4×10−2)(3\times10^5)\times(4\times10^{-2}) and give the result in scientific notation.

Step 1: Group the numbers and the powers of 10: (3×4)×(105×10−2)(3\times4)\times(10^5\times10^{-2}).

Step 2: 3×4=123\times4=12 and 105×10−2=105+(−2)=10310^5\times10^{-2}=10^{5+(-2)}=10^3. We get 12×10312\times10^3.

Step 3: 1212 is not between 11 and 1010: 12=1.2×10112=1.2\times10^1, so 12×103=1.2×10412\times10^3=1.2\times10^4.

Answer: 1.2×1041.2\times10^4, that is 12 00012\,000.

Worked example

Problem: A market scale shows x=2.853x=2.853 kg of beans. Give the bound to the tenth, then the value rounded to the tenth and to the hundredth.

Step 1: To the tenth: 2.8<x<2.92.8<x<2.9.

Step 2: The hundredths digit is 55: take the upper value. Rounded to the tenth: 2.92.9.

Step 3: To the hundredth: 2.85<x<2.862.85<x<2.86. The thousandths digit is 33, less than 55: rounded to the hundredth: 2.852.85.

Answer: 2.8<x<2.92.8<x<2.9; rounded values: 2.92.9 kg and 2.852.85 kg.

Watch out

Common mistakes:

  • 10−210^{-2} is not a negative number: 10−2=0.01>010^{-2}=0.01>0. The −- sign of the exponent only shows a number smaller than 11.
  • 45×10345\times10^3 equals 45 00045\,000, but it is not scientific notation, because 45≥1045\ge10; write 4.5×1044.5\times10^4.
  • To round, look only at the digit just after the required place.

Key points

  • 10−n=110n10^{-n}=\dfrac{1}{10^n}; 10m×10n=10m+n10^m\times10^n=10^{m+n} and 10m10n=10m−n\dfrac{10^m}{10^n}=10^{m-n}.
  • Scientific notation: a×10na\times10^n with 1≤a<101\le a<10 and n∈Zn\in\mathbb{Z}.
  • Bounding: a<x<ba<x<b; aa is the lower value, bb the upper value.
  • Rounding: next digit ≥5\ge5, upper value; otherwise, lower value.
